Car Hire on Holiday - Yes Or No?

The decision of whether or not you should hire a car when you travel to Disney is one faced by many travellers.  I would imagine that the majority of people's reasons for not driving is because they would be uncomfortable or nervous about driving in the USA.  It's perfectly understandable, particularly if you are from the UK - you will have to adjust to driving on the other side of the car as well as the other side of the road.  Another worry is getting used to driving with an automatic gearbox.

If you are planning on travelling to any of the other parks around Orlando, you will again be faced with transport issues.  If you hire a car, you have the flexibility to get around each of the parks without being forced to bus times.

In Florida, there are plenty of attractions such where transport is not provided.  If, for instance, you feel like a day at Clearwater Beach, you will need to get there.  The same can be said for shopping.  Transport around International Drive is easy with the I-Ride bus service, but it's not exactly convenient if you have lots of bags from your shopping at any of the outlet stores.

The concern of driving on USA roads is often more a question of your own confidence.  It is very understandable.  However, driving on the roads in America is very straight forward.  The majority of roads, particularly in Orlando, are very wide and well sign-posted.  This makes getting around much more straight forward.  You can also use GPS to help navigate.

Driving on the other side of the road is not actually as daunting as you would imagine.  You still use the markings on the road to help you drive, albeit in reverse.  The same can be said for driving on the other side of the road.  Fortunately - the one thing that makes the transition easier is that gear changing is automatic!

Hiring a car is definitely worth considering when on holiday at Disney, especially if you want to see a bit more outside of Disney.  When you are hiring a car, there are a few things you should note.  Depending upon your age you may be required to pay a premium on top of the insurance.  It is also worth paying the extra money to ensure your insurance cover covers everything.  When you travel out to the USA, bring your driver's license as well as any paper work associated with it.  Carry these at all times when you are driving in the USA, as well as your rental paper work.
